The Red Road joins a growing scripted slate for SundanceTV that includes acclaimed French drama The Returned and Rectify, a drama centered on a man released from prison after nearly two decades on Death Row. Later this year, the network will premiere two miniseries – The Honourable Woman starring Maggie Gyllenhaal and One Child, a co-production with the BBC.

Created by Aaron Guzikowski (Prisoners), The Red Road tells the story of two clashing communities – a small town and the neighboring mountains, home to a Native American tribe. The series stars Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones), Martin Henderson (Off the Map), Julianne Nicholson (Masters of Sex), Tamara Tunie (Law & Order: SVU), and Allie Gonino (The Lying Game).

The brief episode order won’t be a detriment to renewal for The Red Road, as Rectify were renewed for a second season after its own six-episode first season, especially if the show receives a healthy amount of critical support. The time slot, the same as the one The Returned had, might not be ideal due to the glut of programming on Thursdays, but with football gone and broadcast generally weak in the hour, something like The Red Road could find a strong enough foothold to secure a second season.

The Red Road stars Martin Henderson (Off the Map) as the sheriff of a small town whose family and hometown are both falling apart, with the latter ripped to shreds due to a clash between the town and the neighboring mountains, home of a Native American tribe. The sheriff is forced to ally himself with a dangerous member of the tribe (Jason Momoa) in order to cover up tragedy that resulted at the hands of his wife, but in doing so, he’s put himself in a difficult position that will be even harder to get out of.

During 2013, Sundance went on a major hot streak when it comes to scripted originals, gaining Emmy recognition for Top of the Lake and critical raves for the likes of The Returned and Rectify. Aside from The Red Road, next year will see the release of miniseries The Honorable Woman, which stars Maggie Gyllenhaal (Secretary) as the daughter of an arm’s procurer.

In addition to Henderson and Momoa, The Red Road is set to star Julianne Nicholson (Masters of Sex), Tom Sizemore (Saving Private Ryan), Allie Gonino (The Lying Game), Tamara Tunie (Law & Order: SVU), Annalise Basso (Bedtime Stories), and Kiowa Gordon (The Twilight Saga).

The Red Road is set to premiere February 2014 on Sundance. Season one will consist of six episodes, the same number that fellow Sundance drama Rectify had in its first season this past spring.

Production is set to begin on the series, the second wholly owned by the network following critical darling Rectify, on August 19th. The Red Road will be executive produced by Sarah Condon (Bored to Death), Aaron Guzikowski (Contraband), and Bridget Carpenter (Friday Night Lights), who is also set to act as showrunner.

In addition to her role as Dr. Melinda Warner on the NBC procedural, Tunie has appeared on the likes of Golden Boy, The Good Wife, and 24. while Basso’s TV credits include Childrens Hospital and Bones and Gordon was in an episode of Zach Stone is Gonna Be Famous earlier this year.

The Red Road is set to follow a sheriff struggling the keep his family together and the two communities he has jurisdiction over, his small hometown and the nearby Ramapo Indian reservation, under control. The series will be executive produced by Sarah Condon (Bored to Death), while Adam Guzikowski (Contraband) will pen the pilot script and Bridget Carpenter (Friday Night Lights) will act as showrunner for the duration of the run. Though only six episodes, should buzz (or viewership numbers) for the series be high enough, a renewal will be possible, as the network looks to expand its scripted slate after a successful run for miniseries Top of the Lake and a renewal of critical favorite Rectify.

In addition to her time on the ABC Family mystery, Gonino has appeared on the likes of 10 Things I Hate About You, Rita Rocks, and Unfabulous. She joins a cast that includes Tom Sizemore (Saving Private Ryan) as unpredictable drug dealer Jack Kopus, Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones) as Jack”s son Phillip, an ex-con, Martin Henderson (Off the Map) as the town sheriff, and Julianne Nicholson (Kinsey) as the sheriff”s wife. More casting should be announced in the coming weeks.

The Red Road will likely premiere sometime in early 2014.

Set to debut next year, The Red Road will be the second wholly owned scripted series in Sundance history, with the first (Rectify, starring Aden Young as a man released from prison after 19 years on death row) also returning for its second season in 2014. Like Rectify, the first season of The Red Road, which was picked up straight-to-series, will consist of six episodes. The series will be executive produced by Aaron Guzikowski (Contraband), Sarah Condon (Bored to Death), and Bridget Carpenter (Friday Night Lights), the latter also acting as showrunner. James Gray (The Immigrant) will direct the first episode, though no word on a production timetable has been released as of yet.

Though Sizemore is most known for her film work, including a role in Saving Private Ryan, his television credits include appearances on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Perception, and Hawaii Five-0, where he played Capt. Vincent Fryer for five episodes.
