Created by Timothy J. Sexton (Children of Men), The Lottery tells the story of a world suffering from an infertility crisis and the scientist who might’ve broken it all open. Dr. Allison Lennon (Marley Shelton) has spent the last five years researching the crisis and figuring out how to fertilize a human embryo; once she and her team find a solution and fertilize 100 embryos, though, the United States government steps in and takes control of the lab. Instead of allowing the mother who donated the egg to carry the child to term, it’s decided to have a national lottery to determine the 100 women who would have the weight of the future of mankind on their shoulders.

In addition to Shelton, The Lottery stars Martin Dononvan (Homeland), Yul Vazquez (Magic City), Michael Graziadei (American Horror Story), Athena Karkanis (Low Winter Sun), and David Alpay (The Vampire Diaries).

Their solution? Conduct a national lottery to determine the women that will carry the embryos to term.

In addition to Shelton, The Lottery stars Michael Graziadei (American Horror Story) as recovering alcoholic Kyle, the single father to one of the last children born in the United States; David Alpay (The Vampire Diaries) as James, a colleague of Allison’s; Athena Karkanis (Low Winter Sun) as Presidential Chief of Staff Vanessa Keller; Yul Vasquez (Magic City) as the President of the United States; Shelley Conn (Terra Nova) as Gabrielle, the First Lady of the United States; and Martin Donovan (Homeland) as Darius Hayes, Director of the U.S. Fertility Commission.

The Lottery was one of two new dramas Lifetime recently ordered, the other being romantic drama Un-Real. There’s no word on when the latter will be premiering.

Created by Timothy J. Sexton (Children of Men), The Lottery tells the story of a dystopian world where women have stopped having children. However, 100 embryos get successfully fertilized and a lottery is held to determine who will become the surrogates; the show is said to address the “highly controversial debate over our fundamental and personal freedom to raise a family.”

The Lottery stars Marley Shelton (Eleventh Hour) as Dr. Alison Lennon, the scientist behind the scientific breakthrough that led to the fertilizations; Michael Graziadei (American Horror Story) as Kyle, a single father of one of the last children born in the country; and David Alpay (The Vampire Diaries) as James, a colleague of Alison’s. The show will also feature Martin Donovan (Homeland), Lesley-Ann Brandt (Spartacus), and Salli Richardson-Whitfield (Eureka).

The Lottery is set to premiere later this year on Lifetime. The show is the second original scripted series to be ordered by Lifetime recently, as hour-long dark comedy Un-Real, starring Shiri Appleby (Girls, Roswell) as a young staffer at a reality dating series was given a series order earlier this month. Un-Real and The Lottery join a Lifetime lineup that includes the likes of Witches of East End, Drop Dead Diva, and Devious Maids.
