Executive produced by Clive Tulloh (The Dame Edna Treatment) and Seamus Murphy-Mitchell (Bug), Almost Royal follows two British aristocrats as they tour the United States for the first time. The heirs to Caunty Manor in Norfolk, Georgie (Ed Gamble) and Poppy Charlton (Amy Hoggart) have allowed cameras to follow them from sea to shining sea as they experience the wonders of America firsthand. While Georgie is embarking on the trip in hopes of preparing himself to follow in his late father’s footsteps, Poppy is using the opportunity to go on a quest for fame, as she wants to gain notoriety in the United States by any means necessary. However, the main problem with this goal is that Poppy has no discernible talent, meaning that it’ll be quite difficult to find something about her that stands out enough to make a dent in the American media machine.

The series premiere of Almost Royal, which will be BBC America’s first original scripted comedy, is set to air Saturday, June 21st at 10:00 following Orphan Black. You can check out a trailer for the series here.

Heirs to the largest county estate in Norfolk, the two have agreed to let a camera crew film their adventures in the States, during which they’ll have to become self-sufficient after years of being waited on hand and foot. While affable Georgie is using the trip to prepare himself to live up to his father’s legacy, Poppy wants to raise her profile with the American public and garner some notoriety, whether it be as a pop star, actress, author, lifestyle guru, or cookery presenter.

The series premiere of Almost Royal is set to air Saturday, June 21st at 10:00 on BBC America. Almost Royal will be the first original comedy on BBC America, which has aired encores of Britcoms like Absolutely Fabulous and The Inbetweeners and is currently home to Orphan Black, Atlantis, and In The Flesh.

While BBC America has imported several British comedies in the past, including the likes of The Thick of It and Absolutely Fabulous, it remains to be seen whether an original comedy of their own can break out and find a foothold in a drama-heavy lineup. Particularly interesting is that Almost Royal will have that sort of docu-comedy feel that might help it better fit on the network, despite the fact that the format is on its last legs on American television with the conclusion of The Office and The Michael J. Fox Show and Modern Family and Parks and Recreation aging. In addition to critically acclaimed Orphan Black, the network is currently home to Doctor Who, In the Flesh, and Ripper Street, though the latter was cancelled following its second season and will return for a third through Amazon Prime.

Gamble has appeared on an episode of Man Down and written for Never Mind the Buzzcocks; Hoggart’s television credits include Crackanory and Laughter Shock.

The series premiere of Almost Royal is set to air Saturday, June 21st at 10:00, where it will follow the second season finale of Orphan Black.
