Steve Kazee, Tony Award winner for his performance in Once guest staring in the role of a man whom Joan (Lucy Liu) meets through an online dating site.  Bonnie & Clyde co-stars and also Tony nominees, Laura Osnes and Jeremy Jordan will also be visiting the show this season.  Jordan will be playing the son of a surgical patient who died under Joan”s care.

All three are slated to appear in October episodes.

Lynn Collins (True Blood) will also guest as a math professor helping Sherlock and Joan investigate the murder of two mathematicians.

Elementary returns to CBS September 26th at 10 PM ET.

The filming in London will  be the first time the show has ventured outside it’s regular filming location of New York and should be a thrill for the fans and the characters alike. While Sherlock rediscovers the case, Watson will learn what his like was like pre-recovery and the friends he had before he left for New York.

“We couldn’t be more excited to have this opportunity to see Sherlock’s old stomping grounds and take a closer look at a life that, until now, we’ve only been able to glimpse through the lens of his recovery,” said Executive Producer and Creator Robert Doherty. “By meeting old friends and revisiting prior cases, Watson will gain even more insight into Holmes. She’ll have to keep up with a Sherlock who is both more comfortable in his surroundings and even bolder in testing the limits of those around him.”

With all of the attention on BBC’s production of Sherlock, Elementary was somewhat of a wildcard coming into the 2012/13 season. With winning portrayals of Sherlock by Jonny Lee Miller, Joan Watson by Lucy Liu and Aidan Quinn as Capt. Thomas Gregson, the bet played off extremely well for CBS. Elementary is not only a ratings success in the United States, but globally, as well, hitting the #1 series on Sky Living in the UK, the #1 drama on Network Ten in Australia and the #1 U.S. Series in Spain proving there is room for more than one Sherlock to survive and thrive in the modern day.

Earlier this season it was revealed that until Sherlock met Irene he had no interest in women and found them quite boring. We also discovered that his foe Moriarty was the man to take her life and that Sherlock has no desire to capture Moriarty, but to torture and murder him. It was her death that sent Sherlock into a downward spiral of drug addiction that he has only been able to successfully conquer with the help of Dr. Joan Watson (Lucy Liu).

Natalie Dormer will make her first appearance as Sherlock’s former love interest on the show for a three episode arc that will lead up to a two hour finale on May 9th.

“We’re moving to the next chapter in our show – and in some ways, to a previous chapter in Holmes’ story,” said executive producer creator Rob Doherty in a press release. “Irene Adler is perhaps the most pivotal relationship in Sherlock’s life, and I can’t think of an actress better suited to the challenge than Natalie.”

The series has already been picked up for a second season by CBS. Ardent fans will no doubt start to put together their own puzzle as to whether Moriarty truly killed Irene Adler or if she’s going to be found alive and come back as a character for the second season. Fans of Sherlock Holmes are very adamant when it comes to Irene and never give up hope where she’s involved. Stay tuned!

It’s an interesting choice from CBS, who chose to premiere Undercover Boss the last time they had the Super Bowl in 2010. They could have very easily plugged 2 sitcoms into the slot and either helped their Monday night line-up (2 Broke Girls, Mike & Molly) or gotten the maximum rating that they could by using their Thursday line-up (The Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Men); they would have had history on their side, as there have been several half-hours that have aired a special one-hour episode following the Super Bowl, including Friends, The Office, and Malcolm in the Middle.

Instead, the network picked one of their two new dramas in order to give it a ratings jump start heading into the Daylight Savings/springtime malaise that begins around March. The choice does make sense, in that most CBS dramas are advanced in age and don’t necessarily need the exposure that the slot would provide. By giving the vote of confidence to Elementary, the network is betting on the exposure to the critically praised procedural, a contemporary update of Sherlock Holmes, helping word of mouth and setting it up for a long run as one of their major building blocks.

Elementary airs Thursdays at 10:00 on CBS. The show has already been granted a full, extended first season of 24 episodes.
