Created by Michael Patrick King (Sex and the City) and Lisa Kudrow (Friends), The Comeback follows former TV it girl Valerie Cherish (Kudrow) as she attempts to regain the level of fame she once had. Season two of the series, which comes nearly a decade after it was first cancelled, finds Valerie working on an HBO dramedy written by Paulie G. Even though Valerie will be playing the worst version of herself on the show, she believes that this is the big break that she’s been looking for – the way to finally get back to the top after spending decades trying to become the woman she once was just one more time.

In addition to Kudrow, The Comeback stars the likes of Laura Silverman (The Sarah Silverman Program), Lance Barber (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), Robert Bagnell (Fetching), Damian Young (Californication), and Robert Michael Morris (Running Wilde), with Malin Akerman (Trophy Wife) and Kellan Lutz (Generation Kill) set to reprise their roles as Juna and Chris, respectively.

The first season of the show, which aired in 2005, was lavished with critical acclaim and awards attention for Kudrow’s fearless performance and the show’s satirical take on the inner workings of the entertainment industry.

Taking place a decade later, season two of The Comeback finds Valerie, who realizes just how right she had it all those years ago, having gotten a new career opportunity that could provide her with a new beginning. However, just as she thinks she’s gotten this whole entertainment thing all figured it, it becomes apparent that she still has quite a bit to learn.

Confirmed to be returning to The Comeback are Lance Barber, Dan Bucatinsky, Robert Michael Morris, Laura Silverman, and Damian Young, with Malin Akerman and Kellan Lutz set to appear as successful versions of Juna and Chris, respectively.

Premiering in June 2005, The Comeback told the story of former it-girl Valerie Cherish (Emmy winner Lisa Kudrow, who received a nomination for the first season of The Comeback) as she tried to recapture the fame she achieved at her peak. While she managed to get a reality show documenting her rise, the actual work to come back proves to be more than she had expected going in. The series amassed sterling reviews for the way it portrayed Valerie’s quest for fame, as well as Kudrow’s performance, before being cancelled that same year.

The series was revived earlier this year for a six-episode second season that will premiere later this year, likely alongside critically acclaimed medical comedy Getting On. Already set to appear on the second season of The Comeback are Lance Barber (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) as Paulie G., one of the co-creators of Valerie’s sitcom; Dan Bucatinsky (Scandal) as Billy, Valerie’s publicist; Robert Michael Morris (Running Wilde) as Mickey, Valerie’s hairdresser; Laura Silverman (Bob’s Burgers) as Jane, the producer of Valerie’s reality show; and Damian Young (Unbreakable) as Valerie’s husband Mark.

In addition to his role in the Twilight films, Lutz has appeared on the likes of 90210, Generation Kill, and 30 Rock, while Akerman’s television credits include Childrens Hospital, Suburgatory, and Burning Love.

The second season of The Comeback is set to premiere this fall on HBO.

The return of The Comeback came about due to the show’s success on HBO Go and the positive reputation the show has garnered in the years since its cancellation. Telling the story of washed-up sitcom star Valerie Cherish (Lisa Kudrow) as she tried to recapture the fame of her peak, the series was ahead of the reality television boom of the late 2000s and early 2010s and managed to meld pathos, genuine laughs, sharp intellect, and a cringe factor to make something distinct and lasting. Given the size of the order, it seems likely that the show will air along with medical comedy Getting On in late fall, the two taking over for The Newsroom the week following its series finale.
