At 9:00 will be the six-episode final season of The Newsroom, which ended its second season with the team from ACN staying and Will getting engaged to Mac on Election Night. There’s no word yet on what events from recent news cycles will be included in the third season of The Newsroom or whether the show will lean as heavily on that device, seeing as how they have a shorter episode order.

Following at 10:00 is the eight-episode second season of The Comeback, which takes place about a decade after the events of the show’s first and only previous season. Former TV it girl Valerie Cherish thinks that she’s figured everything out, but in reality, she’s as clueless about fame, celebrity, and the entertainment industry as she ever was. The acclaimed comedy, which gave Lisa Kudrow an Emmy nomination in 2006, will be returning much of its principal cast.

Closing the night at 10:30 is critically praised medical comedy Getting On, which stars Alex Borstein (MADtv), Niecy Nash (The Soul Man), and Laurie Metcalf (Roseanne) as workers in the geriatric wing of a Long Beach Hospital. The show premiered this past November and built an audience mostly by word-of-mouth, as it aired with a one-off Chris Lilley comedy and had one of HBO’s lowest rated dramas as the night’s lead-in. With the high profile return of The Comeback and the final season of a divisive drama acting as its lead-in, the show now has a better chance at being sampled.

You can check out teasers for The Newsroom, The Comeback, and Getting On below.

Are you disappointed that The Newsroom is getting such a short final season? Where do you think Valerie Cherish is after all these years? Will airing with some support allow Getting On to get sampled?

“The Newsroom is classic Aaron Sorkin – smart, riveting and thought-provoking,” said Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming. “I’m sure this farewell season will be one to remember.”

Series star Jeff Daniels, who won an Emmy for his portrayal of newsman Will McAvoy this past September, tweeted that the show would be returning for a third season not long after its second season finale, but an official renewal was delayed until Sorkin penned a Steve Jobs biopic. With the script recently turned in, the show rejoins the HBO lineup for the final time and interestingly enough, Boardwalk will be having its own final season this year, leaving HBO with a blank slate come fall 2015. Of course, they still have plenty of time in order to develop series to fill the shoes of the acclaimed Prohibition drama and Sorkin’s latest creation, but it’s a sign that the network is in something of a transitional phase, as Treme ended in December, True Blood is ending this summer, and comedies Ja’mie: Private School Girl, Getting On, Family Tree, and Hello Ladies seem unlikely to return.

But whenever HBO looks as if it might be approaching a fallow period, they always seem to reload and in this case, they have True Detective and Looking in airing this winter; white-collar comedy Silicon Valley in spring; and The Leftovers, from Lost‘s Damon Lindelof, coming in summer. Assuming at least a couple of those hit, HBO will be in a good position to focus on fall and find a prestige drama that can fill Boardwalk Empire‘s shoes and create the type of pop culture buzz that the network is used to receiving.

Will you be watching The Newsroom this season? Are you upset that the show will be signing off for good? What do you think HBO should do come fall 2015?

The show is once again paired with True Blood, which premieres its sixth season on June 16th, and should finish in mid-September, likely on the same night as the fourth season premiere of Boardwalk Empire.

While Boardwalk will put up fairly strong figures on its opening night, True Blood remains the network’s highest rated drama by a wide margin and could have given The Newsroom quite a few eyeballs for its finale. However, seeing as how True Blood only has 10 episodes this season, it’ll finish five weeks ahead of Newsroom, so while the journalism drama will receive the benefit of a True Blood finale audience, they’ll still have a while to go before finishing their season.

This season, the team from News Night is said to be chasing a mysterious tip that leads a story to spin out of control. Will they be able to get out in front of it? Sometimes in journalism, it’s not about things going well – it’s about knowing what to do when things are going haywire and having the skills to course correct. If News Night can find a way to manipulate the story to their benefit and show how strong they can be in the face of a crisis, it might not matter that the story got out of control. It might only matter that they were able to put a stop to it and show calm under intense pressure, which will earn them a tremendous amount of respect.

The Newsroom stars Jeff Daniels, Emily Mortimer, Sam Waterston, John Gallagher, Jr., Alison Pill, Thomas Sadoski, Olivia Munn, and Dev Patel.

Will you be watching The Newsroom this season? Do you think that the show deserved the criticism it received last season? Is placing its finale behind the Boardwalk Empire season four premiere a wise decision?
