It was a fitting end to the saga of the slave uprising and the savage battles with Rome, but just because the series is over doesn’t mean that it’s the end of Spartacus. Starz has announced that every episode of the series will be repeating on the network beginning Saturday, October 26th, only this time, the episodes will be extended and uncut – more footage, more sex, and more blood. However, there’s no word about the airing schedule – how many episodes will air per day/week, how long the reairs will go on, etc.

It makes sense for Starz to bring back the series in some capacity, considering it’s far and away the most successful scripted series in network history. What’s curious about the announcement, though, is that aside from the fact this reair comes less than two months following the final season DVD release, the show isn’t being used to help launch a scripted original. Currently, Spartacus will be airing on the same night as international acquisition Dancing on the Edge, a miniseries taking place in the 1930s and following a jazz band. Considering that the network has had trouble in launching shows in the last couple of years, with the likes of Boss and Magic City garnering small ratings and little critical attention, it might have been wiser to use Spartacus to help Black Sails get off the ground or prevent the second season of early renewal Da Vinci’s Demons from collapsing in the ratings.

All four parts of the Spartacus saga are currently available on DVD.

Will you be watching the extended uncut Spartacus repeats? Should more networks be doing this with their acclaimed series? Do you think that Spartacus should have gotten another season or were you happy with how War of the Damned turned out?

Starz has released the key art for the final season of Spartacus and the leader of the rebel army remains as defiant as ever.

In the poster, Spartacus is seen wielding a weapon with a golden eagle perched on top, soaked in the blood of his Roman opponents. Behind him, there’s an endless hoard of soldiers coming toward him, ready to continue the battle. Spartacus: War of the Damned finds the Champion of Capua leading an increasingly huge army of former slaves fighting for their freedom against the Romans, led by future emperor Julius Caesar and noted businessman Marcus Crassus. Their numbers may have been tiny last season, but once word got out that a band of slaves took out Glaber, more started to join their ranks and lessened the pressure on Gannicus, Agron, Crixus, and Spartacus. It came at a good time for the army, since they lost a fair amount of people in battle with the Romans, and likely saved their cause.

Now, the Romans are dealing with a group that has gained confidence and showed itself capable of bringing down strong military leaders while having reduced numbers and limited health. With all men of influence in the area gathering together to pool their resources against them, the army will be facing its greatest threat in War of the Damned, but they’ve come too far to back down now.

Spartacus: War of the Damned stars Liam McIntyre, Manu Bennett, Dan Feuerriegel, and Dustin Clare. The show will be adding several new faces this season to make up for the body count racked up in last season’s finale. Joining the cast are Christian Antidormi, Anna Hutchison, Jenna Lind, and Gwendoline Taylor, among others.

Spartacus: War of the Damned premieres Friday, January 25th at 9:00 on Starz. You can check out a preview of the season here.

Will you be watching the final season of Spartacus? What have you thought about all the key art, trailers, and casting information that has been released about War of the Damned? Should the show stick pretty close to historical record from here on out?

In the preview, the stakes for the season have been set. The rebel army, led by “Champion of Capua” Spartacus, has amassed in numbers following their thrilling defeat of Glaber; they’re no longer the ragtag group of slaves that had little to no fighting training and fended off wave after wave of soldiers through sheer force of will. They’re a truly scary lethal machine that has only grown in ability and confidence since Glaber was taken out, so they’d be a headache for any Roman leader to try and take care of.

Standing in the army’s way are two extremely powerful, intelligent men that would like nothing more than to have their heads mounted on the dining room wall. Future Roman emperor Julius Caesar will be providing the majority of the strategy and the thought behind the action of the soldiers; in the preview, Caesar is mentioned as being the only foe the army has faced that understands their mind and fighting style. Meanwhile, noted businessman Marcus Crassus, thought to be one of the richest men in the world, will be providing more in the way of financial support for the endeavor against the army. The band of slaves managed to bring down many a man last season and it’s going to take a tremendous effort for Spartacus and company to be defeated once and for all.

Spartacus: War of the Damned premieres Friday, January 25th at 9:00 on Starz.

What do you expect from the final season of Spartacus? Do you think that the show should be ending now, or would you have liked to have seen more seasons? Considering that the ending is “spoiled” by the history books, how do you think you’ll react to how the final episode plays out?
