“Pretty Little Liars has taken its place in the zeitgeist and reigns supreme in pop culture,” said Tom Ascheim, president, ABC Family. “I am glad to bring another two seasons to our audience because ‘A’ has a lot in store for our Liars.”

The #1 ABC Family series in total viewers, Adults 18-34, Women 18-34, and Women 18-49, among other demo victories, Pretty Little Liars holds the record as the most-tweeted scripted series telecast of all time, and across all genres, it holds 7 of the Top 15 most-tweeted series telecasts ever. No episode counts have been released for the sixth and seventh seasons, though the show has stayed between 22-25 episodes and there’s no compelling reason, bar a ratings collapse, for seasons six and seven to fall short.

What ABC Family has to do, though, is find a show that can gain some ratings traction behind Pretty Little Liars. That might be difficult considering the show’s social media status and how engaged its fan base is, meaning that those who watch Pretty Little Liars tend to watch, tweet along, and spend the hours after the show dissecting theories rather than watching the series ABC Family slots into the 9:00 hour. Thus far, the network has tried to closely parallel Liars with series like Twisted and The Lying Game, as well as counterprogram with lighter fare like Jane by Design, but nothing has fully taken advantage of having such a strong lead-in. With the lukewarm sampling of latest Tuesday drama Chasing Life, it seems that ABC Family might be in the hunt for another Liars companion sooner rather than later.

I could have sworn that Lucas basically admitted to Hanna being a part of the A Team, but she kind of accepted it, felt for him and got angry at Mona. Understandable, but shouldn’t she have been a bit more shocked to learn how intricate the entire operation being used against them as A was, or did they already accept Lucas was one of them and forgive him? The real kicker is Toby is out there pulling strings to ruin the lives of the liars, Spencer in particular. Mona is working with him and he’s sleeping with Spencer. It’s just disgusting.

Did you have any idea Mona was as intelligent as we learned during “Mona-Mania!”? Granted, she was certainly cunning and pulled off the near impossible by slipping in and out of a mental institution without detection, but academically? That surprised me. Not to mention she has some giant kahunas to swing into the Academic Decathlon group and run for Team Captain to boot.

Were the other students living in a cave or something? Why would they have been so easily swayed by her campaigning to actually vote for her. Sure, Spencer can be a bit intimidating, but what intelligent group would seriously consider the mental patient for their team captain? They must not win many decathlons. Something I couldn’t help noticing was how hot Andrew is. When the jig is up for Spencer and Toby (and how long do we have to wait for that reveal?), I hope she falls into his arms. Don’t even tell me that’s too early to dream about.

Byron is really creeping me out. Anyone else think Aria should grab Mike and run like hell to Ella’s place? They should not be living under the roof with Byron until they know for sure he’s not involved with Ali’s murder. That stuff with the Halloween candy and the snow boots when they were all looking for the journal pages sure seemed like an underhanded admission of guilt of some nature to me. And why is he dating Meredith again? Even she’s skeeved out by him, questioning why he was in Aria’s room.

But what an awesome turn of events that Meredith was actually cool when Aria confronted her about the conversation. She even learned about the night Ali was killed without Meredith ever falling out of sorts with her. For the first time since she was introduced, I liked her. I thought she might be duped by Byron just like Ella was. I’m not quite sure what anyone saw in him, but he did produce a beautiful daughter, so he must give off some great pheromones.

Then again, Byron could have used Meredith to position Aria exactly where he wants her to be. For what purpose I don’t know, but I’m not quite willing to believe everything in that house isn’t happening according to some evil plan. Even seeing Mona in her hoodie getting ready to infiltrate his office, I’m still not ruling him out as a top A level candidate.

Finally, I loved the opening scene with Emily and her father. The way they have written their relationship is quite lovely and seeing it helps to understand why she is so strong. Surprisingly, Paige was not feeling so strong and was afraid to show her softer side to Emily. That was really sweet, and a complete turnaround from what I felt for her when she was introduced last year. The growth of all the characters has been so fun to watch, even when they seem to regress. From tough chick to frightened girl, Paige makes the perfect girlfriend for Emily.

Pretty Little Liars

My favorite part of the episode was Spencer stopping for a chat with her half brother, Jason. With Mona and he looking cozy, Spencer found it necessary to warn him. As she’s doing that, Jason was looking directly at Toby and I wondered what he knows about him and his involvement with Mona. At first blush, it would seem if he’s friendly with Mona, he might know what’s going on with them. But, that look wasn’t one of one insider to another, it was of skepticism and distrust. Jason already lost one little sister. Does he truly want to lose another one, even if it’s one he’s just getting to know?

Since Jason appeared in Rosewood, I’ve trusted him. There’s more to his story than the bad boy people thought he was as a kid and the man he has become. I just feel it in my bones. I didn’t have that feeling with Toby, and that turned out to be on the right track. I think Jason is turning to Mona because he just needs someone to be nice to him, and any friend is better than no friend at all. Then again, if I were living there, I’d probably be the next dead chick!

Another strange occurrence was the reaction of Byron after Aria asked him about his relationship with Alison. He could have just let the conversation end, and walked away. But this is Pretty Little Liars – instead, he stopped, turned around and glared at Aria with the strangest look on his face. It could have been the old bait and switch maneuver to make us contemplate his involvement with Alison, or it could really mean he knew her a little better than he let on. We never know with this show, do we? Alison’s diary indicated she was blackmailing him, but how truthful was she, even in her diary? If truth be told, when I was that age, I told white lies in my diary, what I wanted to be true if not exactly what was. Could it have been the same with Alison? Was her ego so unbound that she expected people to read her diary, and planted stories to meet her own ends, just as she manipulated people in real life to get what she wanted?

Being the wonderful father figure he is, Byron accused Aria and her friends of setting fire to a structure during a school function to try to hurt his old flame (ha) Meredith. Was it any surprise he chose Meredith’s side over his daughter’s? I can’t think of a time when he’s truly been there for Aria, and for that I’m sad. As he listened in at her door, it wasn’t fatherly concern, but more of a cover-your-own-ass or perish situation.

One final thing of note was that Jenna switched schools. Does that mean she’s going to take a back seat for the remainder of season three. That’s too bad, because I was finally starting to warm up to her hi-jinks and kind of had hope that she’d come around and see the right side of the whole “A” Team mess. Time will tell!

Once a chubby girl, her best friend was Mona Vanderwall until Ashley DiLaurentis took her under her wing and turned her into a popular girl. It was her friendship with Alison that introduced her to her current best friends Aria, Spencer and Emily.

Hanna has been plagued by “A” issues, including attempts on her life by car, threats against her mother, another car accident involving Caleb’s mother and more. It was discovered that her one time best friend Mona was acting as an “A,” but it didn’t take long for Hanna and her friend to determine Mona couldn’t have been acting alone once she was placed into a mental institution.

With each play “A” makes, Hanna gets more determined to put a stop to whoever is doing it. With her friends at her side, don’t count her out.

Spencer has had a rocky few years. She and her sister like to dip their feet into the same dating pool which has caused a lot of family strife, and Melissa has been an on and off candidate for “A.” Whether she is a part of the group still remains unknown. Her husband, Ian, was killed by “A” and Melissa mysteriously lost her baby. Spencer still doesn’t believe the story surrounding the mystery.

Another ex they shared, Wren, works at the mental institution where Mona was housed, and he, too, could be complicit in the “A” team.

What will become the focus of the upcoming season is Spencer’s current love, Toby. He was the subject of the plot called the betrAyal, as he seems to be one of the masterminds behind the “A” team, and has been working in tandem with Mona to hurt the girls. Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.

Spencer has always been the Nancy Drew of the group, refusing to let any clue go without a complete investigation. Fans are eagerly awaiting her reaction to learning about the fate of her love affair with Toby.
