Based on the Brian McGreery novel of the same name and adapted for television by the likes of Eli Roth, Hemlock Grove follows supernatural goings-on in a small town in Pennsylvania, with the second season, which premiered this past summer, focusing on a massacre, a disappearance, and the harsh truths that can become buried by small town hive mind. The series had the misfortune of premiering around the time of higher profile Netflix projects, including star-studded political thriller House of Cards and acclaimed prison drama Orange Is the New Black, and never generated much in the way of buzz outside its fan base.

Hemlock Grove stars Famke Janssen (Nip/Tuck), Bill Skarsgard (Simple Simon), and Landon Liboiron (Degrassi: The Next Generation). Season two introduced the likes of Madeline Brewer (Orange Is the New Black) and JC MacKenzie (The Departed), with Tiio Horn (Defiance) and Joel de la Fuente (Law & Order: SVU) being promoted to series regulars after recurring during season one.

Kids, we are in for a transformation from man to werewolf unlike anything we have ever seen before. Eyeballs POP OUT and are replaced by new ones. Skin is ripped off and once the transformation is complete, the (rather beautiful) wolf eats what’s left of its human. All while Lily Taylor, playing Lynda Rumancek, who I believe is the transforming Peter Rumancek’s (Landon Liboiron) mother, and his new, wealthy bestie, Roman Godfrey (Bill Skarsgård) look on. Lynda is smiling proudly, while Roman is … well, his expletive at the end says it all, doesn’t it? Check out the clip and then read on a bit more.

One thing is for sure, Hemlock Grove is definitely taking full advantage of it’s off-television television series capabilities. The special effects for that scene are out-of-this-word incredible. It brings to light many questions, as well. For example, now that Peter has, well, eaten himself, how does he change back? That’s one hell of a process, going back and forth and back and forth. What kind of toll would that take on a body? I only hope we’ll learn some of these things during the 13 episodes because the suspense is killing me.

I couldn’t care less who killed the girl at the center of the mystery that starts the story of Hemlock Grove. After seeing this, I must know more about the Rumancek family, their origins and how they live. If Lynda is Peter’s mother, how did she give birth? How often to they change, and why didn’t she change with him? When Peter pounded his fist into the ground, did he crush his eyeballs? Why do I care?

The marketing for this Netflix series is doing its job it I’m as excited as I am, and makes series like Vampire Diaries and Beauty and the Beast, both of which I love dearly, seem tame by comparison. I refuse to mention Supernatural because nothing can touch that magic, but for pre-series excitement, Hemlock Grove is driving me wild.

April 19th cannot get here fast enough! Order Netflix now. It’s marathon time!

Hemlock Grove takes place in a small industrial town where the body of a young girl is found outside a former steel mill. When there looks to be no sign of a killer being caught by the local police, two of the main suspects (a local gypsy believed to be a werewolf and a blue blood from the family who owned the mill) team up to try to clear their names, but it’ll take a lot for anyone to believe either is innocent of the crime. Will they round up enough evidence to bring down the real killer or will one of them be pinned for the murder before they have the chance?

Hemlock Grove stars Famke Janssen (X-Men) as Olivia, the grand dame of Hemlock Grove; Bill Skarsgard (Simple Simon) as Olivia’ s arrogant son Roman; and Landon Liboiron (Terra Nova) as Peter, a gypsy from the wrong side of the tracks. The show will also feature the likes of Aaron Douglas (Battlestar Galactica), Freya Tingley (X: Night of Vengeance), Penelope Mitchell (6 Plots), Kandyse McClure (Battlestar Galactica), and Dougray Scott (Desperate Housewives).

All 13 episodes of Hemlock Grove will be released Friday, April 19th on Netflix, a strategy being used for the other original programming debuting in 2013. The show is based on the novel of the same name by Brian McGreevey, who created and developed the series and will pen multiple episodes.
