The move isn’t entirely unexpected given the show’s behind the scenes drama, absence from the fall schedule for the first time, and the depths ratings sank to during season five.

The big question now is where FOX decides to air the final season of Glee, which is said to be uninterrupted unlike past seasons with scheduled production hiatuses. Given how poorly the show did last season, the most likely candidate would be a Friday slot; it’d minimize damage to other FOX assets and allow a younger-skewing show to go up against older-skewing Friday shows, a break from the heavy competition Glee’s faced in recent seasons.

Should the show avoid a Friday exile, the only logical place for it to air seems to be Tuesdays with New Girl and The Mindy Project, possibly as a replacement for reality series Utopia. Sundays are the home of male-leaning comedies, with the only possible replacement there being comedy The Last Man on Earth; Mondays are for genre dramas, with midseason likely consisting of Gotham and The Following; Wednesdays should be for two-hour American Idol episodes; Thursdays will likely end up being Bones and another drama once Gracepoint concludes its 10-episode run. While Glee collapsed on Tuesdays this past season, it didn’t negatively impact New Girl and The Mindy Project enough to force a cancellation, so in the absence of a new female-friendly drama, it looks like a Tuesday Glee/New Girl/The Mindy Project lineup later this season could happen.

The final season of Glee will premiere midseason on FOX. A concrete premiere date should be released later this year.

Will you be watching the final season of Glee? Where would you like to see the show go over the course of its final 13 episodes? On what night do you think FOX will air the final season?

The creator of Glee, a series based on a high school show choir, Ryan Murphy confirmed yesterday that the show will end after its next season. After three months of Glee actor Cory Monteith’s death, Murphy declared this at a Paley Center event. It was only last week that Glee paid a touching tribute to the late actor’s character, Finn Hudson.

Murphy also said that the sixth season and the series finale, was formerly meant to be based on Finn and his relation with a self-proclaimed singer, Rachel Berry, a character played by Lea Michele, Cory’s girlfriend in real life. He further said that after the tragedy they are still trying to figure what is going to happen next, as they will be revising the entire finale after Cory’s death.

Although, Fox has still not confirmed that Glee is going to end, but in the month of August, the Chairman of Fox Entertainment, Kevin Reilly said that he was not expecting the show to go for more than two new seasons. Murphy further said that the series’ set finale will be honoring Finn, which proved to be a breakthrough role for Cory, who was also paid a special Emmy’s Tribute in September. The honor was not well received by few people, who claimed that the late actor was less accomplished than some of his co-actors, including James Gandolfini from ‘The Sopranos’ and Jean Stapleton from ‘All the Family’.

Apart from being the creator of the show, Murphy is also the executive producer of Glee. He’s also popular for producing the Drama ‘Nip/Tuck’ for FX and also the mind behind American Horror Story, which is now airing the third season.

There’s no word yet on what the network will air on the 19th instead of Glee, though it remains likely to expand The X Factor to two hours.

Additionally, FOX has revealed that three charities that Monteith supported will be accepting donations in his name at this time: Project Limelight Society, a free performing arts program for children in and around the Downtown Eastside, Strathcona, and Mount Pleasant areas; Virgin Unite, centered on reinventing how we live and work in the world and using business for good; and Chrysalis, a nonprofit dedicated to creating pathways necessary to ending homelessness.

The extra time will not only allow for cast and crew to work through more of their grief over their departed friend, it’ll give writers and producers a way to figure out how to integrate Monteith’s death into the show, if at all. There’ll likely have to be some severe rewrites to accommodate the tragic happenings of this past hiatus and the show will have a new direction for the opening episodes of the season; while there’s a minor chance that they could write him out without killing the character, it would be very shocking if the writers didn’t use Monteith’s death as something to bring the original glee club members together. Whether that will yank them all back to Lima to grieve together and reminisce about their friend remains to be seen, but there would be no greater tribute to the character (and the actor that portrayed him) than for his passing to cause his loved ones to evaluate where they are in their lives and whether they’ve been valuing the right things and the right people.

Do you think that the show made the right decision in delaying production, even if for a short time? How should they integrate Monteith’s death into the show? Will Glee feel the same next season knowing what happened?
