True Detective: Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn Join Season 2

After months of casting rumors, True Detective has confirmed its two leads, as HBO has announced that Colin Farrell (In Bruges) and Vince Vaughn (Wedding Crashers) have officially join the lauded anthology. Golden Globe winner Farrell is set to play Ray Velcoro, a cop whose allegiance is torn between his department and an intimidating mobster, while Vaughn will portray career criminal Frank Seymon, whose interest in going legit dissipates after the murder of a business partner.

Deadline is reporting that Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights) is expected to play one of the other two cop roles, while the hunt continues for someone to play female detective Ani Bezzerides. Rosario Dawson (Sin City), Kelly Reilly (Black Box), Jessica Biel (7th Heaven), Malin Akerman (Trophy Wife), Abigail Spencer (Rectify), Oona Chaplin (Game of Thrones), Jaimie Alexander (Thor: The Dark World), and Brit Marling (Another Earth) were said to be invited to read for series creator Nic Pizzolatto, with Rachel McAdams (The Notebook) and Keira Knightley (Pride & Prejudice) also in the conversation for a place on the series.

The first season of True Detective received mountains of critical acclaim for its direction by Cary Joji Fukunaga and the performances from Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. Neither McConaughey nor Harrelson will be back for the second season of True Detective, while Emmy winner Fukunaga will be replaced by Justin Lin, as the Fast & Furious director will direct the first two episodes of season two.

The second season of True Detective will begin production later this fall for a summer 2015 premiere. Additional casting should be announced/confirmed in the coming weeks, as should more concrete information about the seasonal plot.

True Detective Spoilers: The Murder of Dora Lange

Louisiana State CID partners Martin Hart and Rustin Cohle have encountered enough death in their respective careers to where news of a murdered prostitute doesn’t stray from the norm. It may be something disheartening on its own, but after years of working in their field, it’s simply another set of paper work to do and another seedy part of town to visit in order to work the case. However, the murder of Dora Lange is something different than what they’re used to and eventually leads the two down a rabbit hole that it takes them nearly two decades to see their way out of, as there’s more to the killing than meets the eye and the investigation puts enough pressure on both detectives to where they’re changed, both personally and professionally, for good due to their involvement.

Listed below are the dates, titles, descriptions, and repeat information for the first three episodes of True Detective.

Sunday, January 12th – “The Long Bright Dark”
Former Louisiana State CID partners Martin Hart and Rustin Cohle give separate statements to a pair of investigators about the murder of a prostitute, Dora Lange, 17 years earlier. As they look back, details of the crime, replete with occult overtones, are accompanied by insights into the detectives’ volatile partnership and personal lives.

Under pressure to land a suspect in the Lange murder, Quesada warns Hart and Cohle that they might be replaced by three detectives from a new task force. The pair lobbies for extra time to follow up on a lead that takes them from a rural cathouse to an incinerated church. With his marriage to Maggie already strained by work, Hart finds respite away from home.

A hidden image at the burned-out church leads Cohle and Hart to Joel Theriot, a tent-revival minister whose parishioners finger a scarred “tall man” seen with Dora Lange. Brought in for interrogation, a sex offender matching the description is quickly dismissed by Cohle, despite offering a confession. Hart gets sidetracked after Maggie sets Cohle up with a friend at a C&W bar. Looking to establish a pattern of murder, Cohle pores over old case files, finding a connection with a woman assumed to have drowned years earlier.

True Detective Key Art and Teasers: How Can You Touch Darkness?

HBO has released the official key art and several teasers for upcoming crime anthology True Detective. From novelist Nic Pizzolatto and set in 1995, the eight-episode first season tells the story of Louisiana detectives Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson) and Rustin Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) as they track a notorious serial killer throughout the course of 17 years. Hart and Cohle get called in to help the detectives who have the reins in the case in 2012 and get a chance to close the door once and for all on one of the most important parts of their lives. Will they find the peace that has eluded them for nearly two decades and bring the person responsible for the string of murders to justice?

True Detective will reportedly tell one complete story during its first season and move on to a different case/type of criminal in a (currently hypothetical) second season in a similar model to what The Killing was thought to be working under when it debuted in 2011. With each season being close-ended and the cast being scrubbed at the end of every season, a move that differentiates True Detective from fellow cable anthology American Horror Story, the series won’t be setting itself up for the same critical backlash that the AMC/Netflix crime drama had to endure at the end of its first season when the identity of the killer was not revealed as expected.

In addition to Harrelson and McConaughey, True Detective stars Michelle Monaghan (Source Code), Kevin Dunn (Veep), Alexandra Daddario (Parenthood), Tory Kittles (Sons of Anarchy), and Elizabeth Reaser (The Good Wife).

The series premiere of True Detective is set to air Sunday, January 12th at 9:00 on HBO.

True Detective Trailer and Key Art: Life Slips Through Your Fingers

HBO has released a new trailer for upcoming crime anthology True Detective, whose first season will focus on the hunt for a serial killer in Louisiana. While most of the action will take place during the initial hunt for the killer in 1995, with the pack being led by Detectives Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson), the series will also flash forward to 2012, as the investigation gets reopened. Cohle and Hart might not have gotten their man the first go around, even though their obsession with the case threatens to derail every other aspect of their lives, but with the latest break in the case, it seems like they could wind up bringing the killer to justice after all.

In addition to Harrelson and McConaughey, True Detective stars Michelle Monaghan (Source Code), Tory Kittles (Sons of Anarchy), Lili Simmons (Banshee), Elizabeth Reaser (The Good Wife), and Brad Carter (Smashed). The show was written by Nik Pizzalatto (The Killing) and directed by Cary Fukunaga (Sin Nombre), though considering its anthological status and the fact that the story of Cohle and Hart will be completed at the end of the first season, there’s no guarantee that either Pizzalatto or Fukunaga would return for the (currently hypothetical) second season. American Horror Story, the other major cable anthology, has kept creator Ryan Murphy actively involved for its first three seasons, while the writing staff that features the likes of Tim Minear, James Wong, and Jennifer Salt has remained stable, as well, so there’s a chance that both Pizzalatto and Fukunaga could return.

The series premiere of True Detective is set to air Sunday, January 12th at 9:00 on HBO, the same night of the season premiere of Girls and series premiere of dramedy Looking. You can check out the first trailer for the series, whose first season is set to last eight episodes, here.

True Detective Trailer: The World Needs Bad Men

HBO has released the first official trailer from upcoming crime drama True Detective, set to star Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey. The eight-episode first season of the series, which will air alongside Girls in early 2014, will follow Detective Martin Hart and Detective Rust Cohle as their paths cross during an investigation into a serial killer in 1985. Set in Louisiana, True Detective will go back and forth between the investigation and a 2012 reopening of the case, which will feature testimony from each detective.

The reaction to True Detective will be interesting to watch, since there’s been a recent influx of serial killer dramas that could cause buzz to be lower than expected for a new HBO drama with movie star leads and a slick trailer. While it’s sure to earn its fair share of accolades, especially if rumors prove true and the series becomes an anthology, the series will have to contend with recent successes of The Bridge, The Killing, and The Following, as well as the shadow of Broadchurch‘s rapturous critical response, in order to stand out and continue HBO’s reputation for being “not just TV.”

It also has the added pressure of being the first in line for the next generation of HBO dramas, with True Blood ending next year, Treme concluding in December, and Boardwalk Empire cooling off after a blistering first three years of award recognition. There’s a chance it could end up as the only new HBO drama next year and if it ends up underwhelming, the network will be under the gun to find its next great drama, one that would likely have to be more boundary pushing than something like True Detective.
