Starz has released a new photo from upcoming drama Outlander, whose 16-episode first season is set to premiere later this year. In the photo, Scottish warrior Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) receives a severe punishment from Captain Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall (Tobias Menzies), a dark, violent man who will do anything to get what he wants.
Based on the bestselling series of novels from Diana Gabaldon, Outlander tells the story of World War II nurse Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe), who finds herself transported back to 18th century Scotland. Said to combine romance, science fiction, history, and adventure, the series challenges the world that Claire once had when she’s forced to marry Jamie as a way to protect herself. Before she knows it, she develops feelings for him and has to decide whether she wants to stay in Scotland and leave behind everything she once knew or return home and risk turning her back on someone who could be her soul mate.
In addition to Balfe, Heughan, and Menzies, Outlander stars Lotte Verbeek (The Borgias) as enigmatic Geillis Duncan; Laura Donnelly (Merlin) as Jamie’s sister Jenny; Duncan Lacroix (Game of Thrones) as Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser, Jamie’s mysterious and taciturn godfather; Graham McTavish (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey) as Jamie’s maternal uncle Colum MacKenzie, who suffers from Toulouse-Lautrec Syndrome; and Gary Lewis (Gangs of New York) as Dougal MacKenzie, War Chieftain of Clan MacKenzie.

Will you be watching Outlander? Does the new photo look promising? Is the series going to be able to capture what made the novels such a success?
